Eucalyptus niten plantations cover 210,000 hectares of Tasmania but could these grey gums be worth more than just pulpwood?

and while some of its nitens become plywood, the vast majority are exported as pulpwood.

"But I think the biggest driver is that we want to extract the maximum value that we can from this product and we really want to support the Tasmanian economy and we just think that there’s something better that we might be able to do in addition to pulpwood."Operation manager of CUSP's Wynyard factory Michael Lee believes optimistic about cross-laminated timber.

CUSP has been working to perfect this process at their "pilot plant" over the past few years and operations manager Michael Lee is overwhelmingly enthusiastic about its potential."It's used for walls, it's a replacement for concrete and a whole heap of other building materials and it's just a sustainability friendly product," he said.

While wood supply did not appear to be an issue at this stage for a nascent CLT industry, the amount of land dedicated to plantations across Australia has been in steady decline for a decade. Oldina farmer Nick Newman has spent several years pulling up eucalyptus nitens stumps from an old plantation.

Because Aust is lazy

Noooo! Wood Fired Hydrogen ? WTF ! What are they hoping to greenwash the burning of timber? I thought it had been proved that “Blue Hydrogen” is con as it uses why to much energy and needs CCS and a carbon tax, & even then its financial dubious auspol I can see how burning wood, is renewable, but given that we want to reduce CO2, is it just better not to burn the trees in the first place, given that Australian Native forests don’t regenerate that quickly ?
