Tennis players from Russia and Belarus will not be allowed to play at Wimbledon this year because of the war in Ukraine, the All England Club announced on Wednesday. The President of the Russian Tennis Federation said there was nothing it could do but it was "working on the situation"Wimbledon begins on June 27
On the women's side some major stars are also out including, Belarusian world number four Aryna Sabalenka, former women's world number one and two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka and Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, the 2021 French Open runner-up. "In the circumstances of such unjustified and unprecedented military aggression, it would be unacceptable for the Russian regime to derive any benefits from the involvement of Russian or Belarusian players with The Championships," the All England Club said in a statement.
No war crimes committed by these brave pilots... only mistake.
Wars in Yugoslavia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, Libya... yet US and UK players are still in Wimbledon. Let these guys play.
Seemed very odd they were still playing.
This is an outstanding move by Wimbledon
Good on ya Wimbledon. Perhaps those banned tennis players could topple Putin. Not!!!!!
Dangerous precedent...
What did the players do wrong? Why ban them?
well that's it,,,,,, I wonder if the Russian players are laughing now
This is totally ridiculous. Banning players simply because they are born in a country that is involved in a war with Ukraine. How can they be responsible for decisions made by politicians. You are only denying these young players from earning an honest living. .
Bravo Wimbledon 👏 .
That is fucking ridiculous. The anti Russian propaganda is going too far. Every tennis player should protest as one.
