When Trina Mears was diagnosed with ovarian cancer two years ago, Will Barabas dropped everything to stand by the single mother and her two sons, even though the two were in the early stages of their relationship.
The pair met by chance through work and mutual friends, towards the end of Ms Mears' 20-year marriage."When I found out I had cancer the first person I wanted to tell, other than my mum, was Will," she said.Mr Barabas's father, Billy, died of lung cancer, and while shocked by Ms Mears' diagnosis he was somewhat prepared for what she would endure.
"[He] took on the kids and the responsibility — not being a dad, but to be their someone to look to if they needed guidance," she said. Ms Mears had a hysterectomy and was prescribed estrogen blockers to slow the growth of tumours — she finished chemotherapy in late 2019.Meanwhile, Mr Barabas had been complaining of severe back pain, which he thought was due to the nature of his physically demanding work.
