Treasurer Jim Chalmers has hit out at the federal opposition’s proposal to slash permanent migration by 25 per cent, warning it would cost the economy while only having a marginal impact on the nation’s housing crisis.

Australia’s federal treasurer has denounced a Coalition proposal to slash immigration, claiming it will “cost the economy billions” while only impacting the housing crisis “at the margins”.

“We’ve never had a period in history where we’ve brought in a million people when we only have a quarter of a million homes being built,” he said, adding that the obvious solution was to cut migration so housing can catch up. “This will make nowhere near the difference that he is claiming it will and that's because he hasn't thought it through,” he said.

“We need a sensible migration program to find the nurses and the builders, and other people that we need to ensure that our economy can continue to grow into the future.”
