Perspective: We cannot wait any longer. The government must enforce a full lockdown to stop the exponential growth in cases of COVID-19 that is putting the healthcare system - and its workers - at risk.

We won’t be able to judge the success of the current restrictions for another two to three weeks. However, I fear that even if they are being strictly adhered to , these restrictions leave us with numerous opportunities for continued community spread. And, we don’t have the luxury of waiting two weeks. When talking about exponential growth, two to three weeks is a long, long time.We have not done all that we can. Not every job is “essential”, as the Prime Minister suggested.

The economic consequences of full lockdown are of course very significant and not to be taken lightly – shutting down 90 per cent of our economy is not an easy decision to make. But the health and economic outcomes for Australia will surely be better if we move quickly to lockdown than by allowing another week to pass, before finally acknowledging the inevitable.

I have been contacted this week by many doctors and nurses who have real fear that the scenes of overwhelmed hospitals in Spain, Italy and the US could play out here. We need to do a lot more testing and our capacity to do so is improving. But I know I speak for the majority of health care professionals in Australia when I say that we need to move, immediately, to the lockdown stage many other countries have implemented.

I dont agree...they need to shut borders but not full lockdown

Please lock down Sydney ASAP! Don't be too shellfish ! NO MORE NEW YORK!

Are you being briefed by all the relevant experts daily? No? Then STOP printing stories that undermine the people who are. If media would report what is happening and stop speculating on what might be better, that would be helpful!

ChineseVirus19

So do SMH go searching for someone to push their line. This is a disgraceful and embarrassing article from an academic. So here’s this Professor whom you would think would back up the article with mountains of data instead its just another cheap opinion piece.

It took one infected person in China to start the spread. Until they find a cure or prevent any new cases. This will continue into 2021. Lock it down.

Good one SMH, scare the people of Australia. Why would you do that? We are in the best possible situation right now compare to other countries, don’t ruin it!

No they are busy congratulating themselves on a job well done so far. This government only react, foresight is asking way too much.

Dear professor , it’s certainly looking like we are being primed for a lick up. Get ready for the 40% that won’t isolate . Check mobile phone tracking stats in Italy. It’s too hard for say under 35 yo, yo get it. But ....

Bankrupting the whole nation is not the answer for something 99% of people will recover from. Your scared and don’t deal with adversity well at all. If we do that is no life to return to

U r only the media I thick i go with the government

Not needed

And this is why I will not pay $1.75 a week.

Yeah, shut down the 'construction industry'. The shrill blanket statements are starting to get really tiresome.

How can we persuade the Muppets?

Fact or opinion ? Both are bullshit

Media praying for a Fascist takeover.

Those screaming for a full lockdown will obviously not be affected financially. Let’s get a wage subsidy / replacement for ALL in place and then start talking about a lockdown.

He is killing people cause he thinks it's his God's will..refusing to help others is being evil..I was a Christian b4 this human took office now I hundred percent believe he is the leader of a CULT....

People stating our number of positive cases r no longer rising exponentially. But we focused testing on those from overseas etc-they had higher % positives than general population not tested. Now number from overseas lessening+nothing to compare general population rates with.

Just do as ur told

Totally agree. Keep pushing , your voice is louder than the publics.

Exponential Are you sure.

Second day of daily case numbers going down, but sure let’s lockdown because our efforts have not been enough.

medical supplies for health staff. Anyone with symptoms should be tested to isolate the cases but they talk about Per capita testing but would never talk about per capita emissions when developing policies for Climate Change!!! Amazing to see this happening in Australia!

Schnell

The Australian: 'a lockdown is premature.' The SMH: 'we need a lockdown now!!' Political ideology even follows a virus around. The left want centralised government control over the masses, the right don't.

The gov should have enforce full lockdown weeks ago

SMH you are a disgrace. Clearly a trend in the right direction in regards to cases and you are still spinning the dooms day scenario. Of current cases 99% are mild against 1% serious with less and less cases each day. Why aren't you reporting this.

Ever since channel 9 took you over most of your journalism has been crap and like this article lack of research shows

The fact is NSW is the worst performed State in the federation. GladysB and BradHazzard have been asleep at the wheel. NSW is too arrogant and complacent as usual.

What part of the balancing act, that is the pandemic management, until herd immunity is reached, don't you get? We cannot STOP this, we need to have it move through the community in a controlled way, that DOESN'T overwhelm health support, or we stay in limbo for years.

But there is no exponential growth. Where'd you get your figures? Emma Alberici?

Wait, was the new cases rate dropped given what Scomo said during the yesterday updates?

NO. 👎 NO WE DON'T this is just sensationalist propaganda.

Full Communism for Oz. Why not?

Lock down was required way back Border Security has been exposed as bumblers explains the drugs & illegal traffic- ing

This article is a week too late....

Who would have thought a left wing rag would want to create fear and panic by enforcing their sensationalism - you’re really crossing over into The Pirate’s domain meaning you no longer have to give him a job

Why? The curve is flattening....

Yes a super lock down and then back to spreading great idea.

But healthcare workers need to keep working? Or do we lockdown too?

Does that include SMH lockdown?

One smart guy in that photo wearing a mask. Good on him.

It hasn't been exponential growth for the last 5 days

Before a full lockdown you need to understand that the elites will be fine as they have plenty to get by but those on lower need the work to get paid so they can afford rent, food, medicines. They way it is if go to full lockdown will just cause looting and brake and enters.

Media are a disaster. Sensationalism and panic. Follow the national Cabinet advice as they are doing a great job.

Just do it yourselves! We are another day at home but thankfully not unwell like others. Keep busy

This article seems at odds with what is happening and what is now showing signs of winning. I get the Australian media like to push the doomsday scenario and scare everybody because that sells papers but where is the responsibility to calm the community and support each other.

Comparing Australia with Italy,Spain and the UK, not mentioning South Korea,Japan or Singapore which are in our region and without a full lockdown, our government doing the right thing and is working, coalition haters want ScoMo gone even if it means more cases and deaths!

John Dwyer is a professor and his job or livelihood will NOT be affected by a full lockdown. Remember that.

Leave it to the experts.

We don’t currently have exponential growth in cases. We are not doubling every three days A bad opinion piece. Very bad. Using data that’s a week out of date in a situation as dynamic as this to argue your piece is so wrong. Did it take him a week to write it?

Labor Shadow Health Minister said additional measures R not working. 30 March Coronavirus cases in Australia has fallen over the past week

You lot forget what an exponential curve look like? Cause we sure ain't in exponential growth for last few days!

No, we still do not have any basic food products on the shelves, people will still be spending hours a day searching for it.

Why would ScoMo do that when he believes puzzles are essential

You’ve been calling this for days with your coverage. From Wellington: 👏

China virus was made by China. It was manufactured to achieve china domination. They also must have the anti virus.

'They need us': Meet the schoolgirls cooking meals for COVID-19 frontline workersRadhika and Krishnapriya Bhardwaj swap their classrooms for the kitchen of their Toowoomba family home, to cook meals for those on the frontline of the COVID-19 crisis. Well, there is a possibility PM Scott Morrison will make that illegal one day. Keep it up, girls. Sad that these two children have better instincts to help workers than the elected (and unelected) rulers of Australia Great job Radhika and Krishnapriya! You should be very proud. Thank you.
