Building-appropriate sand is suddenly in short supply in parts of the state. Here's why that's a problem.

The price of sand from pits has nearly doubled in the past 12 months in the state's south-west.abc.net.au/news/sand-prices-in-south-west-source-as-demand-increases/101629114A shortage of sand looms as an overlooked problem authorities will soon need to confront as Western Australia grapples with shortages of workers and housing.

"Given the season is just starting and demand isn't going to slow I can confidently say that will increase again."Sand is a key resource required by the construction industry for uses including subdivision developments, house pads and road projects. "For five loads you're looking at close to $2,500 in trucking whereas before it was $400-$500 for trucking."

But he said the state government needed to take a pro-active approach to addressing the growing scarcity and the issues that would come with it.
