Every other Sunday in Alice Springs’ Todd Mall markets you will find Charlie Smith selling herbs he’s propagated in old Coca-Cola cans.Liberal and Labor campaigns winged their way into the Red Centre
Charlie Smith, at Todd Mall markets in Alice Springs, says crime is the biggest local issue and he will be voting Liberal at the upcoming federal election.A self-declared Liberal voter, Smith is not sold on Prime Minister Scott Morrison, but says “he’s better than Albo”.Lingiari, which encompasses more than 99 per cent of the NT, has known only Labor’s Warren Snowdon as its representative since it was created along with Solomon when the seat of Northern Territory was divided in 2001.
He says crime is unquestionably a concern . But it is a complex issue, and one of many moving parts in an electorate of some 1.3 million square kilometres that takes in the townships of Katherine and Tennant Creek, remote Indigenous communities, pastoral and cattle stations, Darwin’s outer rural suburbs and Christmas and Cocos islands.
Coalition strategists hope Ryan is key to winning the town – which, with about 26,000 residents, is the largest centre in the electorate – giving the party a shot at snatching the seat. Watching the media frenzy from the shade of a nearby tree, Kim Webeck hesitates in her assessment of Albanese, but says climate change and growing inequality are her priorities.
“The demographics in Central Australia are different from the rest of the nation. You know, 60 per cent of the Indigenous population is under the age of 25. The rest of the country, everyone’s worrying about aged care, but for us, it’s the opposite,” she says.
After seeing the state of houses in Lingiari today on Tv it strikes me that a lot could be done if those houses were renovated and cleaned at least, They are unliveable. Its a disgrace. Plus of course more homes must be provided.Or at least the ability for people to purchase .
