A snapshot of the confronting amount of fresh citrus produce being rejected by supermarkets has been revealed, as an Australian startup calls on the industry to change produce beauty standards. 7NEWS

The Australian imperfect delivery box company has been rescued more than 1.5 million kg of fresh produce from Australian farms deemed unworthy of supermarket standards to sell it directly to households at a cheaper price since 2020.rescue in a viral TikTok, Ball showed how the company saved 2000kg of oranges and 1000kg of lemons that were rejected from retail “because they didn’t meet the unrealistic beauty standards set by the supermarkets”.

“There’s two main grading: the aesthetics, so how it looks, does it have a blemish? Does it have a mark? And the size, so if it’s too small, that’s another big reason because they can vary quite a bit.”With two million Australian households experiencing food insecurity, according to Foodbank, each dollar saved makes a difference.

Ball says consumers are taught to expect perfection in their produce, but what they look for when picking a piece may not be relevant to its taste. Farmers Pick co-founders Josh Brooks Duncan and Josh Ball are tackling food waste by rescuing imperfect produce from farms to sell to households at a cheaper price.A decreased demand for imperfect products means companies such as Farmers Pick can buy the produce cheaper and pass on the savings to consumers in NSW and Victoria, and soon Queensland, who are “willing to change their perception about what good food is”.
