The invasion of Ukraine was meant to quickly install a pro-Russian government. The plan was unrealistic and poorly executed, Aaron Patrick writes.

Before dawn on Thursday, February 24, military helicopters flew in low over Ukraine’s northern frozen fields towards Hostomel Airport, a testing facility for the Antonov cargo airline on Kyiv’s outskirts.

Military analysts have identified five main problems with the Russian attack: the failure to quickly replace the Ukraine government; not enough soldiers to cover three fronts in a country of 44 million; an inability to control the skies; poor coordination between the attacking forces; and fuel shortages.

As a result, Ukraine has been able to continue to threaten, and in some cases, shoot down Russian aircraft. Ukraine has about 100 S-300 anti-aircraft missile launchers. Mounted on trucks, they can move around and hide. “Without those, they have to get up close and personal, which drags them to within range of things like Stinger missiles that Ukrainian soldiers can operate on the ground.”

Reports this week, based on civilian satellite photographs, said that a 40-mile line of Russian trucks and armoured vehicles was sitting on a highway north of Kyiv ready to attack. The satellite company, Maxar Technologies, later clarified the convoy was 17 miles long. The misunderstanding was made when new photos were published, it said.

A video of a soldier unsuccessfully trying to shoot his way into what looks like an electronics store in the city, titled “Russian soldier vs door”, has been viewed 2.4 million times on Twitter.
