Elon Musk’s surprise sale of another $5.37 billion of Tesla shares to fund his Twitter play has led to calls for chairman Robyn Denholm to act.

Elon Musk’s $US44 billion takeover of Twitter started out as the world’s most expensive joke. But it’s long stopped being funny, especially for shareholders of Musk’s electric vehicle giant Tesla., taking share sales in the past year to a staggering $US40 billion.Musk promised in April he wouldn’t sell more stock, and didn’t tweet an explanation for the latest sales.

But the damage to Tesla has been even more spectacular. Its market capitalisation peaked at $US1.4 trillion in November last year, but has fallen to $US497.9 billion. “The board needs to act and ultimately stop this madness,” Ives told this column. “Communicate a [stock] selling plan for Musk, so it’s not a surprise to the street and give up his CEO role at Twitter.”

Denholm may be able to persuade Musk to take a more programmatic approach to share sales, but whether she can convince the eccentric entrepreneur to give up being CEO of Twitter is another thing.
