A couple of years ago, Xi Jinping might have sent aid to his accomplice. But right now, Beijing needs prosperous friends more than it needs tough guys, writes mishazelinsky.

Sending Chinese weapons to Russia is just not worth it.

Chinese aid can’t patch the unsustainable $US25 billion monthly hole in Russia’s budget caused by the oil price caps, and given its own problems acquiring high-quality semiconductors from Western sources, Chinese exports can’t rebuild Russia’s creaking military-industrial complex. Meanwhile, rampant Russian corruption means weapons may never reach the frontline.Sending Chinese weapons to murder Ukrainians in their homes would complete the hypocrisy.

Xi will naturally fret about losing a paid-up member of the Dictators Club. Putin has helped Xi push back on supposed Western encirclement and arrogance. If Putin loses his grip on power, there’s no guarantee that Russia will remain as belligerent and reliably anti-West. The promise of a better life for ordinary Chinese citizens is central to the CCP’s legitimacy. That makes a serious recession a major threat to the regime.Capturing Russia as a vassal state, a huge country with abundant natural resources and nuclear warheads, is a tempting proposition.

Having declassified intelligence proving it knows what China is contemplating, the US government is promising “severe consequences”.Xi might doubt Western resolve given the mutual assured economic destruction that sanctions would cause. He shouldn’t. If Chinese bombs and bullets enable Russian butchery, Xi can expect no favours. The pivot from “wolf warrior” diplomacy will be revealed as a cynical ploy to drum up business for Made in China widgets.
