Why having Ben Simmons sometimes is better than not having him at all | SMHsport

It would be easy to dismiss Australian basketballer Ben Simmons as another self-interested pretender after his decision this week to miss the FIBA World Cup in China.

We dismissed what pressure someone like Harry Kewell or Craig Johnston faced at Leeds United or Liverpool, and the same with Luc Longley at the Chicago Bulls. We just expected they would come running when selected. Simmons has developed into an NBA All-Star after two seasons and he has done so purely by attacking the basket or passing to teammates, as he is still developing an outside jump shot. He won't shoot one during games unless forced to do it.columnist Bob Ford took aim at Simmons this week for his shooting struggles and his Boomers' withdrawal, just as many others followed that route before him.

Talks continued around his Boomers commitments and they always rested on finalising his NBA deal and shoe contract extension before he could play. They will still have the likes of Joe Ingles, Patty Mills, Andrew Bogut, Dellavedova, Aron Baynes, Jonah Bolden and a host of NBL talents who have stood up for the Boomers during qualifying, most of which was held during the NBA season, ruling out the US stars.
