In a stark contrast to Australia's lockdowns and closed borders Europeans are returning to school, going to work, heading out for drinks and even cramming onto planes for summer holidays, despite rising coronavirus cases.

Europe's attitude to COVID-19 might seem jarring to some Australians, especially those living under lockdown.Europe is facing a spike in coronavirus infections with tens of thousands of new cases per dayTesting and contract tracing has ramped up across the region

Some countries, like the UK, are actively encouraging their populations to go back to work or to socialise. And that strategy will be tested in the coming weeks. After initially going into lockdown earlier this year, strict restrictions were lifted in Spain in June. With tourism accounting for up to 15 per cent of Spain's GDP, holidaymakers were met with open arms.

Only six per cent of hospital beds earmarked for COVID-19 patients were occupied, according to Mr Illa.Dr Lopez Acuna cautioned against this approach. Pascal Crépey, an epidemiologist at the School of Advanced Studies in Public Health, said a second wave had clearly begun. However, French President Emmanuel Macron is reluctant to impose another sweeping lockdown, with hospital capacity still a major factor in the decision.

For example, the UK was testing just 11,000 people a day in early April — and nearly all of them were so ill they were in hospital alreadyAnother major factor has been the number of young people contracting COVID-19. Professor McKee said the Government's decision to ease restrictions on pubs, restaurants, gyms and public transport would naturally result in more cases.

Staggered start times, one-way traffic systems and the use of masks in common areas are among other safety measures being adopted.

Maybe because the 2nd wave of cases hasn’t brought a 2nd wave of deaths - thankfully.

I think it has something to do with the original goal which was to the flatten the curve while living with covid To allow hospitals to cope. European hospitals are currenly coping. That was Australia’s original plan too But Somewhere along the line the goal was changed?

They have ...just listened to DW on abc news radio.....

Because the deaths aren't happening and Sweden has shown them the way.

we should be doing this...

Well, I can't complain, we're good in Europe. It might happen, that some harder restrictions will be implemented again to prevent another lockdown, but we're learning to live with it. Very satisfied how they manage here in Germany, we're basically back to 'normal'.

29,418 deaths in Spain is not a ringing endorsement of their CV strategy..

Because no one cares anymore it’s clearly not as bad as first thought time for life to move on

The cases and deaths are going go sky rocket high these next coming months without lockdown and those Europeans will not be able to come down here because it'll spread it here. We need a vaccine soon!

Australians are not going to Europe just now so it is a non story, Europe are closing hot spots every 5minutes so it seems stupid to even print this as a story of worth, but it is what the ABC has become just the same as 7, 9 & 10 useless

A: Risk management, better preparedness, more knowledge and improved treatment.

Because they are idiots ?

Risk management. I get it.

Victoria is being left behind whilst the rest of the world is opening up with COVID safe policies to reduce spread

They don’t live in a nanny state like nsw is ?

Because sanity has prevailed...

Living in Melbourne and reading this is so depressing. Europe getting on with things while we get daily threats. If their hospitals aren't over run why are we so scared here?

Your article fails to mention Sweden? For a population of 10 million, they have, relatively speaking, outperformed Victoria?

Because 42,000 of their most vulnerable population already died. Their strain of the virus is less deadly. So is the suggestion to let the most vulnerable die in AU?

Seriously Aren't there enough people now who are against lockdown And you have the audacity to post this Shame on you 👎👎👎

Because they fought 2 wars to get freedom and they don’t give it up as easily as us who were gifted it.

Because they are not a police state theocracy like DanAndrewstan...

Because Europeans have balls. World wars, famines, plagues, culture, sense of real community, history, and spirit. Australia is a land of privileged sooks that are scared of their own shadows.

The D614G strain of the coronavirus thriving in Europe is a specific mutation which makes the virus more infectious but less deadly - Paul Tambyah International Society of Infectious Diseases

'Some countries are actively encouraging to go back to work or to socialise', 'less talk of defeating and more talk of living with it..And that strategy will be tested in the coming weeks' If tests ok then Sweden, had they protected the aged, might've been our heroes?

Because Australia like the rest used a 6 month plan. Europe now has realised they have to take a pragmatic approach to balance heath, social and economic outcomes. Australia still stuck with Premiers with big self egos and state politics not the nation’s interest. COVID19Aus

Because they are smarter than we are.

Because they approached it sensibly. Lockdowns are a blunt tool. endthelockdown

FatherBob Avoiding the economic destruction and despair that comes from Lockdown.

Because no one is dying, it's over.....

Because they have better management.

DanielAndrewsMP is your option really the only option? Looks like the entire Europe and even your Queen disagrees with you.

If people read the article it seems Australia has a much better method of controlling things while still letting the economy trickle by. Victoria is an example of what we dont want for the whole country. Not to mention many European countries governments are more corrupt.

Europe open during second wave but my CMO doesn’t want me to hug anyone on Fathers Day 🤡

Pandemic ? Breast cancer, prorate cancer, suicide, pneumonia, road accident deaths - anyone of those should be real pandemic compared to this chinise virus. How Australia can be in pandemic with current figures in SA, QLD, NSW, NT, ACT, VIC and TAS ? Really ? Wakey wakey

Because they're smart.

Because they have learned to live with covid 19

Maybe they've finally woken up to what a massive overreaction to this virus is!!!!

Because it’s a virus and people are left to juggle their own risks

Playing Wuhan roulette.

Because there is no second wave yet as still summer, but winter is comming.

Tourist $$s.

They Obviously PREFER Sand in their Pants...

Because they stayed true to the original strategy we once shared; flatten the curve, ensure sufficient hospital capacity and protect the vulnerable. Sometime in April/May, our governments developed a new strategy but declined to tell us about it....

and within the month we will be reading about all the massive amounts of Covid-19 illness and deaths

Because they have come to realize the truth. The virus can be treated with some drugs. Ask Nigeria and west Africans how they have been able to survive despite not having the kind of health care system that Europe and US has? Continue to ban the use of Hydroxychloroquinne, zinc

3,561 vs 4,102 (July 2020 Vs July 2019) All deaths in Victoria (That is 14 % drop). Media has responsibility to tell the truth not Fear and Hype

What second wave?

Why young people are the biggest losers in Australia’s recessionAustralia is facing an economic bloodbath as we reel from the worst contraction since Great Depression – but there’s one group that will bear the brunt of the pain. 'But as lockdowns ease' And that's happening when according to the media's *experts*? It's already tough. Calling young people big losers isn't going to bolster their confidence. We need to support them as we hand them tomorrow's problems. I’m surprised the young are not screaming from the rooftops.

With zero known COVID-19 cases since July, Canberra remains a coronavirus 'hotspot' as it plans interstate flightsACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr is negotiating a travel bubble with South Australia and Darwin, but the ACT is still deemed a COVID-19 'hotspot' by Queensland, despite having no active cases. Open its Borders to The Strain 'S' . Makes no sense, with this definition of hotspot then the entire country is a hotspot considering anyone could theoretically sneak in anywhere anytime. We need a national approach and CDC during future national healths crises.
