Knowing you exist and that you're over 18 isn't enough to get onto the electoral roll. While half a million Australians are likely to miss out on voting this federal election, it's not as simple as being automatically added to the list.

Key points:The Australian Electoral Commission directly enrols some peopleThe Australian Electoral Commission estimates that's how many people will have failed to get on the electoral roll by tonight's 8pm cut-off.She's been highly engaged in politics for years, including organising a climate strike and now working in the office of independent Victorian MP Ali Cupper in Mildura.

"We shouldn't take voting for granted. There are millions of people around the world that would love the right to vote, and we have it, and so many people aren't exercising it."Direct enrolmentsAccording to spokesperson Evan Eakin-Smith, the AEC does directly enrol people where it can, but often it's not possible to be sure of a person's circumstances.

Mr Eakin-Smith said it's often difficult to be sure where a young person who is eligible to vote but yet to enrol lives, especially if they've recently moved out of home.

Don't be ridiculous that would require a Government department showing common sense

Why can t a woman be more like a man?

I didn't vote in 3 daylight saving referendums years ago...note not voting will cause a fine... the ACE is aggressive to people who don't pay fines... no payment can result in court action, debt collection, affect your driver's licence which can be suspended and credit !

I wish i never registered

We would all have to vote then or be fined now we are only fined if we are on the electoral roll.

It's been decades since they created the 'park bench' address so homeless people could vote. You'd think pinning down floating addresses for new voters could wait a few weeks. The AEC people did say to the High Court they can add and alter 100s of thous in that time iirc

But giving people 7 days to enrol is ridiculous. It is easy to enrol but given the time limit is as expected no one has time to do so especially Easter holidays.

Good idea

And whilst they are there, can they also wipe their bum. Good grief, pls lift your game.

I must say , with the post above someone thinking ..

As simple as that. Also very strange we don't have biometric of citizens database. One can argue about data security and all. But we should adopt the technology for future proof digital. This can solve lot of problem as population explode.

Govt’s can’t run a state or the country effectively.. why should they get that right i guess?

It shouldn't be that the best liar and cheat gets a spot at the trough, political parties must be stopped from choosing candidates because they can't be trusted to choose honest and sincere people to represent their party.

I thought it was 16 years old, but I don't understand why the Australian Electoral Commission is not letting everyone to enrol? Something is wrong here 😕

Also, MyGov is so secure why can't it be used for online voting? The AEC is still in the Dark Ages. auspol

What kind if democracy forces people to vote..i hate voting because it's always the same bullshit that gets elected makes no difference who wins..

And cut out the bullshit threats of fines

When I was 17 years and 9 months I got a letter from my local member at the time, telling me I was now a provisional voter (Barry Jones was my local member). I still have the letter. All it would take is some data mining of the births, deaths and marriages register to start with

Yeah why is that

Are they magicians and know everyone’s address at 18

Why can't we vote online?

Oh Heck, what’s a little more Government Corruption … SackThemAll

I got a letter from the AEC who managed to work out my new home address from 'another government agency' and automatically changed my enrolment. Surely enrolling young people SOMEWHERE and asking them to double check would work fine.

How many fines will the aec issue if 500 thousand people don't enrol? AusElectoralCom
