The 26th of January is not the date the First Fleet landed in Australia, as some think. And it's a day of mourning for many.

Australia Day - or Invasion Day - will be marked around the country on 26 January in dramatically different ways.

"The 26th of January has been commemorated and celebrated, marked in one way or another since the early days of the colony," he told SBS News.NITV: 10 things you should know about January 26For 200 years, the other states commemorated their Australian-ness on Regatta Day , Proclamation Day , Empire Day, and several other days.

"The uninvited British arrival and encampment in Sydney Cove January 26, 1788, was both a staging post, and the start, of a long invasion of First People's land."Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies "We had probably two million people sitting around Sydney Harbour watching the tall ships, the First Fleet re-enactment with Prince Charles and Princess Diana and Bob Hawke."

Then-prime minister Malcolm Turnbull said the decisions were an"attack on Australia Day" and both councils were stripped of their right to hold citizenship ceremonies. For now, the Greens are the only major political party calling for a change of date for Australia Day.Professor Bongiorno said these developments"speak to a large, important, powerful shift in the way Australians understand their past".

I wonder if the romans or Mongolians or Greek or vikings or Japanese will have to pay a tribute for invading other country's from the past ?

AYi51887990 How about we accept you mourn, and we accept that our ancestors where made to come here. And then get on with it. Accept. celebrate what we have and who we are....AND STOP WITH THE VICTIM STUFF. !

Who cares, the arrival of Europeans made Australia a country and the perpetual whingers enjoy the benefits ? Go to China and compare ?

Fuck off woke

Get stuffed 26th January....go invade some other country! (but no, don't invade anywhere please!Go take a long walk off a short jetty)😠

Does it really matter what day we celebrate living in the best country in the world? It's a matter of an individual's perception. If it means invasion, that's up to you. It doesn't mean that to me.😉

Change it to suit our owners. The FirstNationers, ask them what they want instead and make the changes.

And if you’ve fled oppression from somewhere and now live in Australia, and are becoming an Australian Citizen on this day, then you should know that this country has been stolen and it’s indigenous peoples massacred, imprisoned and dispossessed of their lives.

To be totally accurate the first fleet was one of many which relocated prisoners of the British legal system to Australia. It comprised both women and men. It was an ‘experiment’, which stole a whole country and decimated the existence of indigenous people.

Celebrating The day the states officially became a federation (1st January 1901) seems more appropriate day for Australia Day in all ways.

Australia Day should be 1 January.

I will always celebrate the 26th as our countries national day

Grow up. Not saying the aborigines had it tough. They did. But they immigrated thousands of years ago. We are recent. There has to be a day so why not the 1st January to celebrate. All peoples in Australia can come together to say we are Australian. Stop look ahead not behind

United Nations declared no invasion was a settlement go figue get on with today

You are perfectly welcome to your option as I am

There is more to celebrate with Australia Day. It’s a day where we all celebrate this great nation no matter where you are from. It’s sad a minority are so hateful towards it

Neither is the Australian Open

There was no INVASION - if there was there would be no land rights - the Indigenous would be a defeated people . It was agreed 'colonization'

I have not bothered with Australia Day for decades. It means nothing to me personally. Seemed more like a NSW Day. We thought of it as Hottest 100 Day.

Neither was it the date of Federation of I remember correctly.

May I suggest a small change. The first part of the day (morning) is for remembrance and respect and the second (afternoon) is for celebration and thanks. Admittedly not a perfect solution

Seriously? So divisive? Australia is an inclusive plural nation. This is not Israel.

Perhaps create a 'Not welcome anywhere day' for those of us ejected from the original homeland and considered invaders in Australia? Seriously though, I wished it moved years ago as a mark of respect for indigenous people. We don't need to be bloody minded about it.

How many?

Indeed First Fleet arrived in 'Australia' 20/01/1788 Maybe this should be SurvivalDay InvasionDay or even the new (4 want of a less divisive name) australiaday SBSNews auspol NITV AusOpinion changethedate Could this be the solution to the ongoing problem re Jan26th?

The indigenous issues aside (without meaning any disrespect) 26 January to me just makes no sense. It is a very NSW and Sydney-centric holiday, which has nothing to do with the history of the western states. I don't know what Australia Day commemorations mean for WA residents.

Absolutely the new page for the fate of the indigenous people, you knew it !

On the 26th of January 1949, the Australian nationality came into existence when the Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948 was enacted. That was the day we were first called Australians and allowed to travel with Passports as Australians. Under the Nationality Act 1920 (Cth),

mourning... ask half of these people that are mourning what the names were of their ancestors who suffered. bet they cant.

70 percent of Australians are in favour of keeping January 26th as Australia Day

I ❤️ Australia and Australia Day.

Demanding it remain 26th January is not a rational choice.

Here we go again! It’s the same old shit every year! What date should we use? I’m sure that would offend somebody!

Then give your house to an indigenous person.
