Bank manager Winnie Dunn and her namesake author niece are as close as any mother and daughter could be – and just as disputatious.

Winnie Dunn, 47, a manager at a bank, and her namesake niece, Winnie Dunn, 28, author and general manager of a literacy movement, are as close as any mother and daughter could be – and just as disputatious.

Winnie was the first person I told when I fell in love with my wife, Nicole. It was tough – because she thought this would separate us. I kept telling her, “You’re still my little girl.” When Nicole and I married in 2019, I asked Winnie to walk me down the aisle because she’s my firstborn child and I wanted to honour that relationship, to make her a part of our wedding. She was over the moon.

What I love most about Winnie is who she is. She has found the beauty in her Tongan-ness by herself: she is my legacy.I call Winnie “Lahi”, meaning “senior”. After Mum died, we’d go stay with Nana and Winnie on weekends. She was always fun to be around; she took us to McDonald’s, let us stay up and watch movies. All she wanted was to hang out with us.
