South Australians will not be able to return to their home state from Victoria unless they are essential travellers, starting at one minute past midnight tonight.Even South Australian residents in Victoria will not be allowed to return homeIt's among a raft of new restrictions designed to prevent Melbourne's surging coronavirus crisis spreading west into the neighbouring state.

The laws will take effect this evening after Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews on Monday announced 549 new cases of COVID-19 in the state. What are the new restrictions? Earlier this month, South Australia imposed a "hard border" that prevented Victorian residents from entering the state unless they were deemed essential travellers.

South Australians have been allowed to return home since then, but have had to quarantine for two weeks and undergo two mandatory coronavirus tests. Under the new restrictions, South Australian residents will be allowed to enter Victoria but they will not be permitted to return.
