Former army officer and whistleblower David McBride has been sentenced to five years and eight months jail -with a non-parole period of 27 months - for leaking classified military documents to ABC journalists in 2016.

Whistleblower David McBride has been sentenced to nearly six years in prison after leaking classified documents that contained allegations of soldiers committing war crimes in Afghanistan.

Mr McBride's sentencing has been met with outrage from politicians that felt the Australian government should have intervened. Picture: NCA NewsWire / Martin Ollman "We now, thanks to some recent social media activities, we have the funds to lodge an appeal and we mean to do so," Mr Davis said. “Governments have said in the past that they recognise that whistleblowers have their place in a democracy and they should have some protection, but frankly it looks more and more like lip service,” he said, adding the Attorney General had a responsibility to assist McBride.

The incensed Independent MP continued to criticise the government’s lack of action, highlighting that McBride was the only Australian to be sentenced for wrongdoing in Afghanistan. Greens Senator David Shoebridge took to X, formerly Twitter, with a scathing rebuttal to the ruling he felt was incorrect.
