Opinion: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and culture in schools elevate the lived experience of First Nations students. They promote resilience, build confidence and create deeper understanding

With the demise of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission in 2005 we entered a period of what some called “practical reconciliation”. It looked at the statistical gaps between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians – such as in health, life expectancy, education, incarceration rates and housing – through the lens of improving numbers rather than addressing the true needs of people.

Many policymakers do not acknowledge our cultural differences, due in part to the fact that we speak and work among non-Indigenous Australians on their terms, and shelter them from our cultural observance. This cultural perspective has stuck with me. I see the need to close the gap in these cultural ways, too, to wrap around and embrace a wholistic perspective.
