A massive global Twitter bot network is amplifying pro-Russian disinformation about Ukraine as part of an online information war, researchers say. Here's how they found it, and what Twitter is doing in response.

As Russian tanks rolled across the Ukraine border on February 24, Russia's state-controlled or affiliated news organisations flooded social media with Kremlin disinformation narratives.

Dr Graham found the network while investigating a loophole that allows official government accounts to spread disinformation without attracting scrutiny or warning labels.Twitter has pledged to not recommend or otherwise amplify tweets from Russian state-affiliated media organisations, and to include a warning in every tweet that links to one of their stories: "Stay Informed: This Tweet links to a Russia state-affiliated media website".

Next, Dr Graham deployed a specialised software called Botometer, which uses a machine-learning algorithm to distinguish bot accounts from human ones by looking at the features of a profile, including friends, social network structure, language, and sentiment.it's certain the account is a bot. For at least five years, Twitter has been cracking down on the malicious use of bots to spread disinformation.

I’m overjoyed people are starting to see through this crap; you may as well be straight out of Project Mockingbird - end of story, it’s pathetic and so is this government…

US has Meta & together with UK they have Cambridge Analytica... of yes, & so-called free press they reported about far-right neo-nazi & nationalist in Ukraine before, but now zipped Time, BBC & The Guardian

Although it will take time the chooks will eventually come home to roost.

Why won’t twitter force 2 factor auth on every account? Social media is a net loss for humanity

anybody who doesn't agree is a Russian Bot ... and probably an anti-vax trump supporting hillbilly ...

Incredible in the day after the budget, we get news about Nick, bots,& so on. Instead of having heaps of information and discussion about how this and all budgets are actually spend and what actually mean, since this is our tax money. We also had a Lib MP calling the PM ruthless

I think ABC is spreading misinformation

the screenshots from the article address: 1) arming/training of Ukrainian nazis prior to the conflict 2) US funded bio labs 3) the conflict in Donbas 4) conflict initiated by the US since WWII In the interest of unbiased reporting please follow up these issues

And has a massive taxpayer funded organisation to promote stories that suit their leftist political views and totally ignore stories that don’t. theirabc

Twitter banned 75,000 “spam” accounts since the beginning of the war. If you ban someone 90% of the time they’ll create a new account which accounts for the 16,000 relatively new accounts. Many people create accounts specifically because they are interested in the conflict

. On EVERY ISSUE & TOPIC OF DEBATE the ABC run an article on bots & misinformation. Or why you must trust ABC & Aussie politicians & not believe a different narrative. ABC & Ch9 regularly have stories about how to treat friends & family who point out lies. .

. Even if a Russian bot army is half real, it pales to the propaganda media the US & west have. Just read the bs out of Aussie 'free press'. Today's claim is Zelenskyy is target 1 yet the war is in its 5th week! And Sunday ABC reported on the Russian generals being targeted.

.. and the ABC has a tribe of radicalized Aarts students come *journalists*

Not unlike the state of the Australian media at the moment.

Typical Kremlin Russian propaganda? Just feed the people sh*t. Works every time

Quite amazing how many YouTube articles with a pro Russian bias are from Indian contributors.

Funny I thought all the info I am getting fromTwitter,YouTube, and MSM was very pro Ukrianian / Nato. Thanks for the wake up call.

So what, people don't trust Social Media, MSM and politicians. If this is true Russia are wasting their time and money. 🤔

Whereas in Australia the current government has most of the media on it's side.

Biden says he wasn't calling for regime change in RussiaThe US President clarifies that the United States does not have a policy of government change in Russia, after his declaration that Russian President Vladimir Putin 'cannot remain in power'. What he said first was Biden thinking for himself and not sticking to the puppet masters script. Lol after he did I'm betting there is a difference between his personal opinion and what his policy would be. Given his age it's not surprising he's blurting out things like this and then his staff walk it back.
