Opinion: When I look at America torn apart, I see my own family and Australia's history of racism, writes Stan Grant

These are hard times. Times when it feels like we are forced to choose sides. Times when race matters and I wish it didn’t.

Sometimes Coates’ words seem too bleak, yet this week his words sound like prophesy to black Americans. This week, George Floyd is every black person in America who has died under a whip, lynched from a tree, or perished in a building set on fire by racists in white hoods. History hangs so heavy in our world – on the streets of America, across the Middle East. It hangs heavy in the borderlands of Europe and behind the wall of China.

How I wish we did not have to choose sides. How I wish we could slip the yoke of history. How I wish this was not about race. But this week, it is hard to not see race when race is all we see. When people who have been branded by race seek the solidarity of race.Yet the violence can blind us to those people black and white marching together peacefully, those who still cling to what the greatest American president, Abraham Lincoln, called the better angels of our nature.

750,000 soldiers died in the Civil War of America that resulted in abolishing slavery . 180,000 were Afro American, 570,000 were White soldiers.

We’ve killed so many aborigines and yet we believe we r the expert to comment on other countries human rights like our history is perfect. We’ve got so much racism in this country it is entrenched in our daily lives. We need to get off our high horses

Stan’s tan grows simultaneously with virtue signalling!

Nothing like fanning the flames

To those who are making racist remarks here - could you please share what satisfaction you derive from posting your ignorance and hatred? Are you angry and hurting for some reason? Do you seek to degrade another human being and hurt them to have company in your own pain?

So why in God’s name did Stan Grant seriously consider running for Reid as the Liberal candidate. A party that has fought tooth and nail to defeat Land Rights and refused to say sorry to the stolen generation.

Ok Stan...there is so much systematic racism that no Aboriginal person could ever amount to anything...it's like an Aboriginal could ever be in the media.

Hey Stan you might want to see what the USA did to their indigenous people, haven’t seen you complaining about that.

When I look at the US, I see protests that have killed more black people and not by the hand of Police action but let’s just gloss over that as ‘criminality’ and maintain a ‘systemic racism’ narrative as this will correct any injustice perpetuated by society.

riots

China see it too. What a coincidence.

Get with Jesus Christ Stan, and your racism is finished. Get with the good indigenous Christians across this great nation. Get with reconciliation. Christ Jesus died for the sin of the whole world. No more racism

Stop. Stop using the States situation (which you obviously know nothing about) to garner your own spotlight. Get on with positively lifting our nation, not dragging it down.

Is that the white Stan Grant or the black Stan Grant?

The continual inciting. Culpable.

They came here as slaves?

Which Stan Grant?

Also they’re from the 7 network owned by Kerry Stokes. Need I say more. Where is the comparison !

Trump villainised by 'toxic US media environment' | Sky News AustraliaFormer US Naval Intelligence Officer John Jordan says US President Donald Trump has “received a lot of criticism and unquestioned adulation from his base” following his demonstration of authority outside of St John’s Church amid nation-wide protests. \n\nThe president was pictured holding up a bible in front of a Washington church that had sustained fire damage from Black Lives Matter protests taking place across the US, following a speech where he threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807. \n\n“President Trump, what he did here was ham-fisted, so much so that it’s unfair to hams everywhere,” Mr Jordan told Sky News. \n\n“It was not necessary, what he should have done was an Oval Office address talking about what steps the federal government was going to take to make sure that justice prevails here and to seriously deal with the underlying issue of law enforcement and the black community,” he said. \n\n“But anything President Trump does is going to be roundly criticised, fairly or not, and the fact is he did not invoke the Insurrection Act. \n\n“They’re treating like what he has done is without precedent when in fact it was, if he had done it. \n\n“So the American media environment is toxic in the extreme.” \n\n Image: Getty \n\n realDonaldTrump He tear gassed the very priests and parishioners of that church, who were giving out water to the people Trump says sat fire to said church.
