When gifts were exchanged at a friend’s birthday dinner a few years ago, it soon became clear gifts have a language I may not always understand.? It explains that expressions of love can be made through actions, touch, words, quality time, or gifts. The theory is that we favour one expression over another. I’m pretty sure mine isn’t gifts. When one friend at this party gave the hostess a Gucci ring costing, maybe $500, I realised I was probably under-performing.
The difference now is that gifts tend to be a group effort. The one-on-one gift is less common. Aside from being more expensive, it’s also practical, less wasteful and very welcome. “Group gifting has become much more socially acceptable. It meant the world to me.
Honestly - gifting a $500 ring from Gucci is actually hilarious. It’s the equivalent of buying a $5 pair of earrings from Target. Nobody is going to be impressed. Less so the recipient who probably went...

Sitting here right now it's hard to believe that just 3 years ago I managed an exclusive boutique in the Paris end of Collins Street. Amongst famous customers were the women in town to organise a Gift Registry at, say, David Jones for their 10, 13 or 16 yo children.
this is like the most obnoxious way to brag about wealth
