Maya Hawke, daughter of Ethan and Uma, delivers an authentic, considered release with her second album, Moss.

It’s impossible to examine Maya Hawke’s career in the arts without considering the gigantic advantage of having two Oscar-nominated Hollywood icons as parents: Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman. Refreshingly, the younger Hawke readily and regularly acknowledges her privilege. But she also knows that being a famous offspring will only get you so far.

It rings true when Hawke says her musical career isn’t motivated by furthering her star power; it’s simply a means of expressing herself. She might have been born with more privileges than some, but one of those blessings was talent, the unsurprising result of combining Hawke sr. and Thurman’s DNA.

Almost five years on from their bright breakthrough, the titular weather forecast of Flowertruck’s follow-upmight signal a dour shift, but it’s, gratefully, just more of the same evocative, romantic, playfully misanthropic jangle-pop - ever indebted to the Go-Betweens, Orange Juice and the UK’s ’80s anorak set - albeit a tad more tightly wound, probably due to experience, new guitarist David Gauci’s springy solos, and, well, a general post-pandemic millennial malaise.
