Opinion: The pandemic has forced us to recognise the immense value of the public realm, but we need to define it and also the private realm - and to value the demarcation | emfarrelly

The pool looked so glorious in the morning sun. On impulse, I raised my phone and snapped it. Leafage, water, sky and higgledy-piggledy urban roofs: what could be more typically, deliciously Sydney? Yet within seconds the attendant was upon me. “No photography allowed in this pool. People are nearly naked. It’s a privacy issue.”

It’s Insta-fodder and honestly, if they want to front the world butt-first, fine. I’m just intrigued that we’ve created a culture where Max Dupain’s famous 1937image would be considered an invasion of privacy but the strewing of privates across the internet by persons too young to vote is considered jim-dandy normal. This is not some simple slide toward social openness or self-exposure.

Stranger still, a smaller, older building nearby with the same demographic mix was almost entirely trouble-free. Newman wondered why. But COVID-19 has forced us to recognise the immense value of the public realm, especially the outdoor version. That is, mainly, streets. You might think it a stretch from the humble street to bare butts on Instagram. But think about it.

Soccer pitch at former Belair Golf Course site failing to draw local supportPublic feedback appears overwhelmingly negative towards a proposal to build a seven-pitch soccer field on part of Australia's second oldest national park, although improved mountain biking and walking facilities get the nod. For better local support they should have described it as a football ground or even better a football oval.

Barty faces favourable Australian Open draw, Kyrgios on course to meet ThiemWorld number one Ash Barty is unlikely to encounter early trouble in her Australian Open campaign, but a third-round clash with Dominic Thiem may be on the cards for Nick Kyrgios. When someone 'faces' something, it's a negative thing. A favourable tennis draw is a positive thing. This is basic English. Who did this stupid thing? Stop it. You're the ABC. Ash Barty is just an awesome Aussie wish her all the best in the Open Kyrgios - who cares - he obviously isn’t interested and presumably he will get paid to commentate for most of the tournament.
