Consultant microbiologist Evan Bursle says he has never experienced such intensity and stress at work — and he's not alone.

"The scientific and technical people who were seconded internally were already trained in SNP protocols and operations having had prior experience working in other disciplines.

"Victoria was way ahead of everybody else for a while, doing 20,000 to 25,000 per day. That has declined to something like 10,000 to 15,000.Mr McKechnie believed other pathology sites were processing "relatively consistent" numbers of tests as SDS Pathology. All laboratories have strict protocols in place that are used if a sample appears positive.

SDS Pathology's Mr McKechnie said while a lot of people receive their results via text message, the procedure is to contact the patient by phone or face-to-face in the event of a positive result.

"To coordinate hundreds of tests at different locations at short notice is now the new normal for us in COVID times.
