With more changing health advice and discussion about the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, SBS News explains what role the shot will have in Australia going forward.

The reputation of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine has taken a beating in the past few months, with links to very rare blood clots and changing health advice limiting its use to younger Australians.

Those who’d already received the first dose are still being urged not to cancel their appointments for the second dose and show up - the Department of Health says almost all of the few cases of blood-clotting reported to date have occurred after the first dose of the vaccine. The vaccine will continue to be available for those over 60, but it’s a far cry from the government’s original plan to use it to inoculate most of the population.

“When you fully appreciate how small the risk of TTS is, the decision to have the AstraZeneca vaccine to protect yourself and others becomes a much easier one to make,” said Hassan Vally, an associate professor from La Trobe University's Department of Public Health.Another reason we can't ditch AstraZeneca is that we don’t have enough of the Pfizer vaccine for the whole population - yet.

“Unfortunately, the federal government put most of their eggs in the AstraZeneca basket, and this is now becoming a major problem,” said Adrian Esterman, the chair of biostatistics at the University of South Australia.Professor Julie Leask, a professor of nursing and midwifery at the University of Sydney who focuses on infectious disease and immunisation, said demand is likely to increase for the Pfizer vaccine in the coming weeks and months.

Each country has access to the same raw data to make decisions on suitability and recommendations on age groups or banning it all together. Each country has seemingly come to a completely different conclusion which clearly shows this is the exact opposite of science.

Travel back on the cards for Victorians as COVID numbers fallMelburnians will soon be able to travel freely to some parts of Australia and New Zealand as the latest coronavirus outbreak eases. Melbourne residents will be able to visit Auckland before they can visit Adelaide. I get that SAHealth and marshall_steven are quietly embarrassed that a failure in SA HQ led to this outbreak in Melbourne but the remaining restrictions look pretty absurd now. Totally don't care. Funny! We Melbournians can dust off the passport & head across the ditch to NZ…. but oh no! Not Queensland or WA 🤦🏻‍♀️🤭

Australia is a multicultural country. Why do we wed ourselves to just US and UK options, regardless of the quality It's just idiocy. And very disrespectful Import more vaccine options now. Sputnik V is highly rated. Sinopham too. Both are WHO approved. Health over politics Greg Hunt should resign Covid19NSW Everyone in Australia to have their dose of vaccine before my party in October! Why Australia’s advice has changedThe changed health advice on who should get the AstraZeneca Covid vaccine has caused confusion and concern among many Australians. Here’s what we know about its safety and effectiveness. U know nothing about it’s safety! It’s not fda approved because of spike proteins that consume ur body and organs which is toxic - animal testing and human testing not done - which is against the law!!! Apparently the next announcement is only people over 100 can get the Astra Zeneca vaccine !! Only in Australia you see Army Generals controling the vaccine and commenting about it, SHAME AUSTRALIA
