Victoria records five additional deaths, 357 new cases overnight | Sky News AustraliaVictoria has seen five additional deaths overnight as the state recorded 357 new COVID-19 cases.\n\nPremier Daniel Andrews said 536 of the state's active cases originated in aged care settings among both staff and residents.\n\nFour of the deaths were women between 60 and 100-years-old, with the fifth, a man in his 80s.\n\n'Aged care settings, particularly with many casual workers is a really challenging setting,' Mr Andrews said.\n\n'We see in terms of the number of cases and the number of people who by, the very nature of these settings, are frail and have many underlying health issues.\n\n'Obviously private sector, both church and charitable, and full-profit aged care is a matter for the Commonwealth.\n\n'But this is a crisis. This is a challenge we need to work very closely together to try and beat and manage.'\n\nMr Andrews did not rule out the imposition of further restrictions should cases continue to surge but applauded Melburnians for their compliance regarding mask-wearing.\n\n'Masks are effectively our stage four. If they are worn by everybody, then we may not need to go further,' he said.\n\n'We can't rule out going further with rule changes but it's a big game-changer potentially.'\n\nMore than 200 Victorians remain in hospital with 42 receiving intensive care.\n\nImage: News Corp Australia\n\n Yep horse racing, construction, department stores and fast food chains definitely need to stay open with these numbers! What a joke! stage 4 NOW!!!!! Wow, that means it killed almost as many people as the flu, and accidental falls! Whatever will we do?

Federal government takes control of Victoria's aged care crisis | Sky News AustraliaThe federal government has taken control of Victoria’s aged care crisis as fatalities continue to rise.\n\nVictoria has seen five additional deaths overnight as the state recorded 357 new COVID-19 cases.\n\nFour of the fatalities were women between 60 and 100-years-old, with the fifth, a man in his 80s.\n\nPremier Daniel Andrews said 536 of the state's active cases originated in aged care settings among both staff and residents.\n\nAfter 74 cases were recorded at St Basil’s aged care facility in Melbourne, the Commonwealth intervened, effectively taking control of the situation and moving some residents out of harms way.\n\nHealth Minister Great Hunt highlighted the importance of a “rapid response” when it comes to dealing with COVID-19 outbreaks in nursing homes.\n\nImage: AP Why such stupid and inflammatory language. Why not the federal government invade Victoria and take over from our government in what way has the fed Govt. taken control? you mean this response centre? The new centre will be jointly managed by Emergency Management Australia, Emergency Management Victoria and VicHealth.. that's assistance... not 'taking control'

Victoria records highest daily COVID death toll | Sky News AustraliaDaniel Andrews has confirmed 10 more Victorians have died from COVID-19 and another 459 people have contracted the virus over the past 24 hours.\n \nPremier Andrews said seven out of the 10 deaths were men aged in their 40s to 80s and three were women in their 70s and 80s.\n \n“Of those 10 fatalities, seven are linked to aged-care outbreaks and three are not linked to an outbreak,” Mr Andrews said.\n \n“There are some 560 active cases in aged care. The exact number of settings will be finalised in that release later today, and we have some 381 active cases among health-care workers.”\n \n“That is a significant challenge, given, whilst we have overall capacity and we’ve worked very hard throughout the year to grow the number of people that can be available for our fight against this virus in a clinical sense, whenever we have clinical staff and other critical health workers away, furloughed because they are a close contact or in fact as an active case, that does put some additional pressure on our system.'\n \nThe state’s death toll has now risen to 71, the highest in the country.
