Experts suspect the unique mutation of the variant of the coronavirus first detected in India is behind the humanitarian crisis. But it's not contained to India — the variant has spread to more than a dozen countries, so here's what we know about it.

The WHO says more study is urgently needed. Laboratory-based studies of limited sample size suggested potential increased transmissibility, it concluded.

The picture is complicated because the highly transmissible B.117 variant first detected in the UK is behind spikes in some parts of India. In New Delhi, UK variant cases almost doubled during the second half of March.Indian cities such as New Delhi have had to resort to mass cremations for the COVID-19 dead.

Prominent US disease modeller Chris Murray, from the University of Washington, said the sheer magnitude of infections in India in a short period of time suggested an "escape variant" may be overpowering any prior immunity from natural infections in those populations. But gene sequencing data in India is sparse, and many cases are also being driven by the UK and South African variants.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been criticised for allowing massive political rallies and religious festivals, which have been super-spreader events, in recent weeks.Read more about Australia's vaccine rollout:White House chief medical adviser Anthony Fauci said earlier this week that preliminary evidence from lab studies suggested Covaxin, a vaccine developed in India, appeared capable of neutralizing the variant.

Public Health England said it was working with international partners but that there was currently no evidence that the Indian variant and two related variants caused more severe disease or rendered the vaccines currently deployed less effective.

It could be that many of the population is Vitamin D deficient, which could lead to an inefficient immune system.

Good job drumming up even more hysteria about getting Aussies home from India. Yes it’s bloody terrible there but that’s why we need to bring our people home so they don’t die there. Concentrate on getting quarantine right.

Lets be realistic. It is the Indian people's response that has led to the outbreak. Failing to maintain adherence 2 Covid safe protocols, attending mass festival gatherings and acting as if Covid was not still a world pandemic has got them in this dire situation. Now they suffer.

Overcrowding.

🙄 ABC - Have you ever been to Mumbai?

Over 1 billion people in close proximity to each other would be my layman's guess.

A racist federal government
