The Democratic House Speaker has laid the groundwork for Donald Trump to become the third president in US history to be impeached. But how likely is it that he could become the first US President to be removed from office as a result? We explain:

Trump has been accused of telling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a July 25 phone call that he would obtain $US250 million in stalled US aid only if he agreed to investigate the Biden and his son, Hunter.

For Democrat House speaker Nancy Pelosi, who had been opposed to pursuing the impeachment of the president, the latest accusations marked a turning point. Unlike a party leadership change in the Westminster system used in Australia, impeachment in the US is not about handing over power, as much as judging whether the official has abused the power of the office, then taking action if they have. The American system, framed by an 18th-century Constitution, has fixed presidential terms that are generally cut short only by death in office. Impeachment is a remedy for offences, not a transactional change in leadership.

In both of those cases, the presidents were impeached by the House of Representatives but were acquitted by the Senate. So they weren't removed from office.

The more important question is 'why is GSP standing behind Trump?'

Well if it's keeps his finger away from the nuke button I say impeach away...but the good mail is dems won't get it thru the senate.

The Dems just fell into a trap. They should be laying out an alternative vision for the country, not launching endless futile investigations.

That women fought hard & vigorously supporting 'I did not have sex with that women' BillClinton facing impeachment calls. It's all about her & her shabby country wrecking political party.

lol so when you be transparent and release the full transcript of the call - Democrats run for impeachment. Full on PANIC! They CANT impeach without 2/3rds of the vote from the Senate which Republicans have majority of. lol Read that Transcript! Whistleblower Who? lol

I want a piece of Nancy´s Impeachment Cobbler

Slim to none

Trump is in the hospitality/real estate business. War is bad for those business. All the impeachment politicians want war. They are invested in the weapons companies that they regulate. Trump is a deal maker. Deals are bad for war. Follow the money, and figure out the rest.

Not very. Mike Pence is next in line, do 'they' really want that?
