ANALYSIS: What if what we find so unsettling about China is not that it is so different, but that it's so like us?

Xiao Qian said nothing that has not been said before. He said nothing that is outside Chinese Communist Party orthodoxy. We have heard it all before. All from the CCP playbook. The Communist Party has always reserved the use of force to "reunify" Taiwan with the China mainland.

Xi Jinping was feted by our political leaders on a visit to Australia in 2014. The same Xi Jinping then as he is now. China embraced aspects of capitalism — albeit with "Chinese characteristics" — even joining the World Trade Organisation.

Oh please…. Chalk and cheese. Why? You only se Chinese leaders and their family leaving to the “west” not the other way round

No, Chinese culture is very different from the 'western values '. For example, The history of the British Empire is a sinful history of aggression, oppression, humiliation, exploitation, cruel rule and endless misery against weak and small countries and nations.

Anyone that follow global politics can see this, which is why democracy, freedom of speech and religion are so important.

It is nothing like us

Fire Stan Grant

Agreed. We need to present alternative narratives and vision opposite to authoritarian brinkmanship, that is virtuous, and economically & culturally more appealing. There’s no sense of pride in nationalism that hurts others. Aussies need to show our egalitarian success and pride.

We won't find anything & ABC as a govt media/propaganda machine will make sure that. AU share values with US. AU foreign policy is written in US. we will do & say whatever US will command. We followed US in every war from Korea & Vietnam to Iraq & Afghanistan now Ukraine Taiwan

Europe is not western, western a cultural belief in an individual’s agency. Something the European powers never liked but had to deal with as they lived so close to it’s source in England. Socialism aims to return to the absolute power of the state. The war we fight today.

As usual, Stan Grant delivers a pile of steaming irrelevant philosophers and his own boot-kissing view of China. Seriously - why are our tax dollars paying him?

Finally, some rational commentary. Australia should be cautious about aligning our strategy with that of the United States. The United States is a great power and arguably on the decline, it needs to contest China's rise. All countries need to view situations for themselves.

It's because they're not white and they dare to challenge us 'whites' and are beating the white anglosphere world in every metric despite the anglosphere's desperate attempts to hold them back. That's what is unsettling.

Yes, western, effectively oligarchical, ideology and economic operations are losing support of their own people and have little appeal to the Chinese. For the West to to be universally competitive in both regards our only recourse is to actually embrace liberal democracy.

Love fr 🤑

That China has emulated 'the west' is a plus, it's a basis on which to negotiate a post cold war Global Security Architecture. Since WW2 world population has quadrupled (2bn to 8bn) and p2p communication has become instant. The west has made great progress on individual 1/

Worst headline ever...

China has locked up dissidents, silenced voices and oppressed minority groups from Tibetans to Uighur Muslims yet none of that stopped us from drawing closer to China, deepening economic ties. Money speaks, not ethics.

b_spectabilis Stan is a bit like Mao in this article. 70% good, 30% bad. China didn’t become a state with an economy dominated by multinational corporations, dependent upon IMF support, and with a corrupt US schooled elite acquiescent to a US rules based order. That’s why it’s a threat

What i find so unsettling about China is how the United States and other developed nations systematically paved the way for its ascent economically. Somehow with the hopes that for some reason it will follow the same way as the Soviet Union if it were at peak economic health?

Why do we (Australia) see China as a our national threat, even though, time after time, we see US jeopardising peace and stability in our own ‘backyard?’

Stan Grant once again tells us what to believe

You only hate what you see in yourself

deniseshrivell “If China represents the worst aspects of the West, does this moment demand that the West look to itself?”. Absolutely but I suspect Xi will never aspire to what we have. Why don’t we just aim to improve the World to sustain life and peace for its own sake, and for our kids.

Trump said climate change is hoax and some people still believe him, for those extremely conservative political parties, it must be unbelievable and unbearable that how come a communist party can reshape china to pose a threat to their world built under their rules-based order

Are you on fucking meth? Who the fuck wrote this

China exploits pretty much any country it can as well as its own people. The US has a far more equal relationship with *most* other countries

It is first time in human history that yellow skin people ppl can make a call without listening to white, which makes white so unsettling .

Saying China got a lot of it's political theory from the West is pretty obvious, the 'Communist' part of the Chinese Communist Party kind of gives it away 😉

How can Yellow people be same as White people?
