Explainer: What can you do to avoid – or survive – a bushfire? | jennynoise

Rainforest burning. In September. If ever there was an omen of the bushfire season ahead and a sign of the new normal, it would be the loss of 17 homes in Queensland's Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast in the first two weeks of spring.

As urban sprawl continues to creep into bushfire zones, experts warn that more people may need to plan for a bushfire in their backyard. At "severe", only if a home is well prepared and the homeowner is physically and mentally capable of defending it should they consider staying. "What we don't want to see you do is choose to stay and defend, and at the last minute think, I can't do this and try to leave."There are few sentences more ominous than the bushfire emergency warning alert that states: "It is too late to leave. Seek shelter as the fire impacts."Inspector Shepherd says your best chance of survival is sheltering in a building and fighting the fire from inside.

In a disaster such as Black Saturday, radiant heat would have been responsible for dozens of deaths. It is strong enough to set vehicles alight, and can kill people who think they are safe sheltering in pools and waterways, but who make the fatal error of breathing in superheated air.
