A minke whale that became stranded in the River Thames in London has been freed after a four-hour operation but its life still "hangs in the balance".
Marine mammal experts from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue arrived on the scene and worked to free the whale from the shallow concrete ledge. Mr Garside said the whale is from the northern North Sea and is hundreds of kilometres from its home.The experts were joined by authorities from Port of London Authority, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and the London Fire Brigade, the spokesperson said.
"The location is Richmond Lock and we saw a group of spectators, we saw a seal there earlier this year, which is unusual, so we thought it was him again," Mr Magee told CNN."Some lock keepers hosing him down and it looked like the tide was going up so he could turn around.The whale is believed to be a three-metre minke.
