A humpback whale that became tangled in fishing ropes off the South Australian coast has now been set free after a delicate rescue operation that lasted several hours.A local whale expert said it was likely"distressed and exhausted"The whale was spotted on Monday evening about one kilometre offshore near Chiton Rocks, between Port Elliot and Victor Harbor south of Adelaide.

The Department of Environment and Water said it received reports"about a humpback whale entangled in ropes and floats off the coast"."DEW has a marine disentanglement team trained to help entangled or stranded whales, dolphins and porpoises," the department said in a statement.Before the rescue, Elizabeth Steele-Collins from local conservation group Encounter Whales said she expected a difficult and potentially dangerous rescue operation.
