Residents in Sydney's west are having to wait up to 14 minutes longer than inner-city residents for an ambulance responding to urgent cases.

Ambulance call-outs were divided into three categories: urgent cases such as broken bones, emergency cases such as chest pains and life-threatening cases such as car crashes and cardiac arrests.

For urgent cases, North Sydney-Mosman and Camden had the smallest wait time of 25 minutes while Sydney's eastern suburbs' median wait time was 28 minutes. NSW Health Services Union secretary Gerard Hayes has called for an extra 1,500 full-time paramedics to help speed up response times in Sydney’s west.

“At the moment, the government is papering over the cracks with casual and contract paramedics who need to be made permanent.”

Opening up Sydney means freedom for some, but fear for othersAs we cheerily reclaim our lives, spare a thought for those who will not be protected against COVID until we all are. What's the alternative? It will never be possible to 100% guarantee that no-one will ever get sick from a virus; and if that's the criteria for re-opening, we'd be in lockdown for the rest of eternity. Clearly that isn't viable. A naive view of vaccinations for respiratory tract infections, which are never 100% effective, no matter what the virus If you’re uncomfortable with the current freedoms, exercise your right to stay home
