A French national living in Australia has been praised for his brave actions by the Prime Minister, after he stood up to Joel Cauchi during the Bondi stabbing rampage.

Anthony Albanese said he would welcome Australian citizenship for a Frenchman who won the respect of the nation for his bravery during the Bondi massacre, which earned him the nickname" Bollard Man ".

Footage emerged on social media of Mr Guerot at the top of an escalator, trying to fend Cauchi off with a bollard as he moved towards him. Damien Guerot has been praised by the Prime Minister for his heroism in the face of the Bondi stabbings. Picture: 7NEWS The tradie, who was assisted during the terrifying incident by his friend Silas Despreaux, is in the country on a temporary visa which is due to expire in July.

“I say this to Damien Guerot, who is dealing with his visa applications, that you are welcome here, you are welcome to stay for as long as you like," he said. "It says a lot about the nature of humanity at a time when we are facing difficult issues that someone who is not a citizen of this country, stood bravely at the top of those escalators and stopped this perpetrator from getting onto another floor and potentially inflicting further carnage on citizens.
