‘We will defend our democracy’: Penny Wong warns Iran on foreign interference

The Albanese government has hauled in Iran’s top representative in Australia to reprimand Tehran for its brutal crackdown against anti-government protesters and warn the regime against undermining freedom of expression in Australia.

Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong said the government was prepared to use foreign interference laws against supporters of the Iranian regime.Wong said she was moved by the image of the Iranian men’s football team staying silent when their national anthem was playedon Tuesday morning , an act of apparent solidarity with anti-government protesters.

Wong said the September 16 death of 22-year-old Iranian woman Mahsa Amini after she was detained by police for allegedly breaking the country’s forced hijab rules “and to the streets of cities around the world including Australia”. Wong said the Department of Home Affairs had launched a targeted engagement with the Iranian- Australian community to identify anyone harassing anti-regime protesters.

Wong told Parliament the Iranian government had become increasingly brutal over recent days, using machine guns, drones and missiles to attack protesters in Iran.The Iranian government last week said it had summoned Australia’s ambassador Lyndall Sachs after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese spoke out on human rights concerns.
