Ryan McGowan's daughter Millie is almost three months old but, for almost all of her life, he's been on the other side of the world in Sydney FC's A-League hub | SMHsport

For Sydney FC defender Ryan McGowan, anything less than a championship medal will feel like the sacrifice he made to finish the season was not worth it. Between training sessions and games, the Australian international sits in a hotel in North Ryde getting to know a daughter he has barely seen via Zoom calls.

'Massive sacrifice': Sydney FC defender Ryan McGowan had to leave his baby daughter Millie in Scotland to finish the A-League season. For all the pressure on Wednesday's semi-final between Sydney FC and Perth Glory, few people have more riding on it than McGowan. Having been given his family's blessing to return to Sydney, he wants to repay their faith with a trophy.

He was put through a rapid pre-season program for three weeks before playing in all six of Sydney's games since the season resumed on July 17. "It’s not ideal, trying to get up early to catch them at the end of their day. Then it’s about 5pm when they get up. It’s not been easy," McGowan said. "They’re the sacrifices you need to make if you want to win things. Hopefully, we will have fond memories to look back upon if we win the grand final."
