On top of dealing with her own life-altering diagnosis, she was asked by her husband to be sparing with the truth when talking with friends and colleagues, after he was hospitalised in ICU for two months. At the time, there was a rare strain of tuberculosis going around London with similar symptoms, so she told people he had been diagnosed with that. For the next 10 years, she lived with HIV but kept it quiet as her husband didn't want to tell anyone.Ms Costello opened up about her diagnosis to those around her"We separated, which then obviously provided me with the option of being able to tell family and friends. I was very well supported, which was great," she says.

A HIV diagnosis is still life-altering, but there's been a lot of progress in terms of treatment in recent years"We now know that if you have an undetectable viral load for at least six months, you cannot transmit HIV. You cannot pass it on sexually, and people are living long and healthy lives," she says.In NSW, more than 92 per cent of residents on treatment have an undetectable viral load.
