After the dreadful alleged murder of Molly Ticehurst in Forbes on April 21, I thought long and hard over the following 24 hours about what I would say on air. I decided to just make a few notes. That became an editorial as I started to talk about how many women had been found to have been murdered in my lifetime by boyfriends, partners and husbands.
I reflected on how terrorist Man Haron Monis, on bail for serious sexual assault charges, was responsible for the deaths of two innocent and beautiful people in Tori Johnson and Katrina Dawson at the Lindt Cafe in 2014. Of course, at theinto their killings, police were targeted for their response, but there was no mention of the failings of judicial officers.
Federal governments haven’t fared much better in protecting women. In October 2022, the Albanese government, in conjunction with NSW and other states and territories, produced a national plan to end violence against women and children by 2032. Two years on, we’ve heard plenty of talk, pages and pages of government documents and a growing number of women being allegedly murdered by men. We’re all sick of the soundbites. They think inquiries and gabfests are going to solve the problem. They won’t.
If the judiciary wants to retain its independence, perhaps it should reflect on the words of His Honour Justice Peter McClennan, who chaired Australia’s landmark royal commission into institutional responses to child sexual abuse, another scourge on our society.
