ANALYSIS: We're repeating the same mistakes in Alice Springs

Following a "crisis" visit to Alice Springs, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called for a partnership between the Northern Territory government and the federal government to address the problem. The government has also announced. So far, these apply universally and not only to Aboriginal people. However, the government is also considering bans on Aboriginal communities.

There have been calls for greater support for First Nations families and organisations to empower them to keep their communities and families safe.has identified the need for better justice partnerships between government and Aboriginal communities. Yet, the media coverage has been on the need for top-down punitive and paternalistic responses.

Aboriginal justice sentencing for aboriginals rather that traditional justice aka jail maybe the answer. I understand 'spearing' to be a penalty dished out for serious offences. That should put a stop to crime.

It is madness to do the same failed things again( doing it with Medicare too). Just goes to show neither Lnp or Alp have any new ideas. Bottom line is there is neither penalties nor is there rehabilitation. Another major problem is there isnt any employment. No hope of better

I predicted a few days ago we'd start seeing this sort of article on the ABC. Downplaying the drunken anarchy and the crime that was being reported and dismissing the experiences of the victims of these crimes, indigenous and non indigenous victims. Reverting to type. Poor.

Free The Weed! Less violence and petrol sniffing. Allow them togrow it themselves. Employ 1st nations people to enforce grog and drunk free zones around communities and homes. Let the people who binge drink their grog in a designated place away from children and busy roads.

It’s a frightening situation for everyone who lives there. Hard to implement extra support services on these isolated communities bc no one wants to live/work there except the local people themselves. The conditions for outside workers are poor, very lonely and often dangerous.

Interesting article, is there a article somewhere that offers strategies or plans or solutions in any way shape or form. Way too many experts offering commentary but no solutions. What are the credentials of the authors of this article, have they been to the Alice very recently .

More “experts” chiming in from over 1,500km away. Can we please hear from people who actually live there?

Correction, the ALP is.

‘We’ are not.

Disingenuous, this is. What should be done, do you reckon? Send in few slabs of VB and some nangs for the kids to have some fun?

If the ABC spent more time reporting news than trying to make it, we would all be better off !

same mistake or same situation or same people?

it is disappointing that theconversation would publish an article by learned individuals that has zero focus and no mention of the victims of the crime wave in NT and WA. Are the victims to be considered collateral damage? What about an article on the justice system? auspol

Australian government increasing the gap

I am not effected myself but would it not be a good idea to think of ways to lift the moral in the community with maybe some free stuff free events free hand outs sure why not make the people feel wanted, Taking away the booze is more like a punishment in their eyes

Yes, if only there were some way where we could get input from the people affected. You could call it, I dunno, something like the Voice, that sounds catchy. Maybe the ABC could start promoting it in a positive manner.

Oh ... ita's analysis column

There might need to be another Rescued Generation.

Put the little $hits in jail problem solved.

It’s a tragedy 236 years in the making!

It actually was helping ABC... The resumption of alcohol got the old ball rolling again FFS.

tell your community to stop raping kids when they are drunk

Honouring the diverse perspectives of First Nations people obviously doesn’t work. If they can’t look after themselves who is going to look after them and save them from themselves? The ABC?

I agree, let’s start with equality. Firstly we have to treat indigenous people the same as the other 97% of the country. Remove all indigenous services and increase services available to all. No more special treatment in respect to healthcare, education or justice.

Thats a lot of people. Thousands flock to streets to protest Invasion Day in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra If all they want is to change the day, I cant see the problem.I drink beer Monday. I drink beer Tuesday.Whats the difference?

Listen to the Community. Checkout Sustainable Australia Party

are 'we'? us? 'we'? are the parent/s who let their kids run wild in the streets making mistakes? are the wannabe gangsta violent teens making mistakes? why shame 'us', abc? these violent hoons are the ones who deserve shaming get effed, abc

Any suggestions?

Albanese to visit Alice Springs as crime crisis overshadows Voice to ParliamentThe Indigenous Voice to Parliament debate this week has been overshadowed by the spiralling crime crisis in Alice Springs, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese set to visit the town today. Support for the Voice has dropped from 53 per cent at the end of last year to 47 per cent. Skills and Training Minister Brendan O’Connor suggests the crisis is a further reason to push the Voice, considering previous attempts in the past at reducing alcohol-fuelled violence have failed. If the referendum succeeds, it will be the fourth attempt in 50 years to establish a representative Indigenous body to advise the federal government, with one of the key criticisms of the proposal being the so-called lack of detail. Hope he reminds them he grew up in housing commission with a single mum. Then they'll know how tough life can be Of course, there are no voices in Alice Springs just those in Darwin and Canberra. 🙄😒🫤😏😟😩🥴😵‍💫

Anthony Albanese is visiting Alice Springs, but will anything change? It will be hard for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's Alice Springs visit to not look hurried and reactive, because it is, writes Alice Springs-based reporter Steven Schubert. Probably not there answers for everything is smart city's will fix this problem it's better for everyone what a joke Off you go, take a pillow and don't come back till it's fixed. Local law enforcement is not a federal issue. Albanese shouldn't have allowed himself to be baited like this.

‘Circuit breaker’ needed for alcohol and youth violence in Alice SpringsCentral Australian Aboriginal Congress Chief Executive Donna Ah Chee says a “circuit breaker” is needed to combat the growing alcohol and youth violence crisis in Alice Springs. “Because of this alcohol-fuelled crime as well as having kids out on the street … because there’s alcohol being drunken at levels that are causing them to get out on the street,” she told Sky News Australia. “The combined Aboriginal organisations back in July last year sent a letter to a number of politicians, including the Prime Minister, at both the Commonwealth level and the Northern Territory level putting together a comprehensive strategy.” Curfew and booze ban. A circuit breaker is needed. That makes so much sense doesn't it. No it means she has no idea what to do.

‘No doubt’ crime spike in Alice Springs is directly related to removal of alcohol banThere’s “no doubt” the crime spike in Alice Springs is directly related to the removal of the alcohol ban, according to the Central Australian Aboriginal Congress Chief Executive Donna Ah Chee. “We’ve been meeting with government, we’ve been putting our concerns forward both privately but at times publicly as well,” she told Sky News Australia. “This is no surprise, what’s happening here to this town … it has progressively deteriorated to the extent where in my view, the situation that we’ve got now is not like it was when things were bad ten years ago - it’s worse. “There’s absolutely a crisis, and something needs to be done immediately, and we know what that is, we know what works, we know what’s caused this alcohol-fuelled crime.” And what caused it ? Nah. Just coincidence, I’m sure. But if you take grog away from the blacks you're a racist.
