A shock defeat to Argentina in their opening pool match means Australia’s men’s sevens side must beat New Zealand on Tuesday to progress | SMHsport

After five years of preparation, there are two kinds of Olympic events: those that forgive and those that do not. The Australian men’s rugby sevens team thought they were in the former kind, but put themselves, on Monday at Tokyo Stadium, in the latter.

Coached by Tim Walsh, who had steered the Australian women’s team to their gold medal in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, the Australians were vocal and energetic in the opening exchanges with Argentina, but were beaten in a succession of physical contests, most notably losing three successive restarts. “We’re hurting,” Walsh said after the loss, pinpointing the inability to win possession after restarts in the first half, which “starved us of the ball”, as the chief reason. At half-time, he stressed the importance of winning those restarts and matching the physicality of the impressive Argentinians.Explaining his decision to hold Kerevi back, Walsh said, “He’s not probably sevens fit. But in hindsight, you look at it, his first touch he goes and scores.

SMHsport

SMHsport Typical of Australian rugby at the moment. Exactly when they can’t afford it they trot out with a slow start. How? In saying that we would struggle to beat 15s Pumas.
