We are facing a national skills shortage. Without enough skilled workers, Australia risks losing its footing as one of the world’s most advanced economies with 28 years of uninterrupted economic growth – a record unequalled by any other developed nation.
This means teaching the knowledge and skills required to get the right job. That means a job that inspires them and harnesses their talents, so that they actually want to turn up for work every day.For some, this will mean going to university. We have a strong and robust tertiary education sector in NSW which attracts people from around the world.
We all know there is a cultural bias towards university but university isn’t always the best option. For some students, we actually hinder their opportunities by not encouraging them into a vocational pathway.I like the way Premier Gladys Berejiklian phrased it when she said we want universities and VET to be thought of in the same sentence for workers looking to prepare themselves for high value jobs of the future.
No problem with vocational education, just remember, your TAFE course might be cancelled on a whim and a private vocational education college might collapse and teach you 'cooking skills' by showing you photographs.
For once, I totally agree.
Maybe they should all be drug tested - just in case
Not one mention of the gender bias. Only 3% of tradies are female. Women apparently don’t want to work outdoors away from the air conditioning and get their hands dirty. The clanger is women are now complaining there aren’t enough similarly educated single men to date!
The USA is also dealing with this very issue. Less than 50% of students who enter a 4-yr undergrad program, actually graduate. Less than 50%. And then they’re still stuck w/ student loans. There ARE other options; other vocations/trades that pay very well!
Geoff how did you reach this conclusion so late? Dopes inc. Yes I taught Tafe for a long period and it was far from perfect. I actually taught kindergarten to University as well as Tafe and staff development. Only the top 20% should be at UNI.
75% of private school kids go on to university, only to get a job working for $25 an hour....YOUR being undercut by all the peasants that the Govt brings into our uni system from overseas, they work here for nothing so they can get a worthless degree as well
I hear about this skills shortage but don't see many apprenticeship jobs advertised. When they are 1000's apply
gdgoz Sorry but anything the SMH says after holding a major fundraiser for Scott Morrison, can only be interpreted as propaganda
Preaching to the choir. Teachers have been saying this for years. The response was to increase the leaving school age for students. We’re letting so many young people down.
Ive been saying that for 20 years
We need as much diversity as we can manage. Who’s going to unblock our toilets?
A tradie with a modern trade education, confident in their highschool education, confident as a person, is going to do more for Australia and themselves, than any Uni student ticking boxes. Howard and lnp gutted TAFE of trades. How good is that? auspol insiders .abcnews
If your lot hadn’t gutted TAFE maybe that would be an option. Instead, all we’re left with are Liberal donors running their dodgy VET courses above chip shops whose only role is to rip off the taxpayers.
SonsMary Not in America. Here, everybody has a right to attend university, free of charge, of course. No brain needed there.
Maybe, we should just let people go for here jobs and careers they want
