For many Indigenous people across Australia, the Aboriginal flag has been symbolic of sovereignty, pride and protest. But the recent debate over ownership rights has some wondering about its future.

Indigenous Tasmanian photographer Wayne Quilliam has lugged his camera across the country for almost 30 years to capture significant cultural events. It comes as some Aboriginal nations are choosing to embrace their own flags as symbols of their identityThroughout that time, he has seen the many nuances of cultural expression and identity throughout different communities — and their relationship to the Aboriginal flag.

But in 2018, Mr Thomas granted exclusive rights to the non-Indigenous company WAM Clothing, who has since issued infringement notices to several organisations who use the flag.Senate to launch a federal inquiryAs the country celebrated NAIDOC Week, the Coalition rejected a motion to hang both the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags in the Senate.

"This debate has put these things into perspective and made me think about how I actually belong to a mob and different countries … the flag was only something that was adopted in the 70s whereas Aboriginal culture has been around for millennia," he said. Ms Padgham said the flag was designed to reflect the rivers and mountains across Taungurung land, which encompasses the regional communities of Mansfield and Alexandra."We describe ourselves as the first peoples of the rivers and mountains, and, accordingly, I chose to represent this with a symbolic silhouette of a mountain and river in the lower part of the flag," she said.

Ms Padgham is glad the Taungurung people own the rights to the flag and hopes her design, which was selected by her community from a host of entries, will become a symbol of cultural pride.

It reminds me that there are still too many decadent activists trying to divide Australia and turning us into a Pacific version of the Balkans.

Not my people. Their choice. Defund the $35 Billion each year to these racists. Give it to Australian kids.

As its a private trade mark flag, and people need to pay to fly it?

'We are one people made up of many peoples'. That flag represents segregation from Australia. The aboriginal flag represents those who want to blame the white man for everything bad in their life, but at the same time reap all the benefits for free.

. It doesn't represent anyone or anything in an official capacity. It's a copyright trademark used to make a profit for an indicidual by licencing its use. .

The Flag is first nations symbol and represents their achievements, skills, culture and blood lines..... Totally detached from European culture and life experience, traditionally our values and thinking is totally opposite, not wrong, just different...

This is a trademarked flag that i dont even think they own, so maybe a flag already exists they can get behind, you know like our Ntaional Flsg?

How are we one ppl when we're all the time being told we're not Indigenous and being cut out of government jobs and many economic opportunities for not being aborginals? Were clearly not one ppl...

All colonists and illegal settlers must leave after much genocide and disrespectful evil proselytization of the aboriginal tribes

Well yeah...there's about 100 different first nations that you're all trying to squeeze into the 1 flag

Why have Aboriginals adopted the Maori practice of wearing animal skins? And the indigenous Canadian appellation of First Nations? Cultural appropriation?

there are over 700 tribes/mobs who are represented by this flag. Around 25 million by the Australian flag. One thing in common as both have many people with many opinions about them. Sadly one man makes money from Indigenous flag

Abo's never had a flag, nor a nation. All tribal. Southern black feared northern blacks for eg. The flag is apparently under copyright, anyway. It has been captured by activists, and is now a symbol of division, contempt and hatred.

I vote for the utopia of stark trek.

If we are going to play the game ownership I honestly have all the respect for aboriginal citizenship and rights in Australia. I also feel Europeans have a right. It is unfortunate the reconciliation sees this as an us versus them question. I have no stomach for that.

The flag means nothing to millions of Australians. 4% of the population with a few fake members continually sticking their hands out for cash whilst contributing nothing.

Does the ABC employ anyone not afflicted with middle class guilt?

I see it as a symbol that in this country the aboriginal culture exists/persistis/fights and this struggle is also everyone’s. Unlike so many places around the world where to goal is to wipe out first nations entirely. When I visit my sons school under 3 flags, it makes me proud.

Tell me again how this is the 'oldest continuing culture' that has no unified name, no unified language, and can't even agree on a flag.

I know who doesn't respect this flag..starting at ScottMorrisonMP, the complete LNP, PaulineHansonOz & more vipers! They are treacherous

One Nation, One Flag, One Anthem and One Social Welfare System Equal To All.

Since Aborigines did not have flags or anything approximating flags, isn't the whole notion of an 'Aboriginal flag' just a form of cultural appropriation? (see Wikipedia)

Not me.

they are useless and we give them to much value and in the years to come may be ask for the keys for Australia . who

In real terms about 4%

Probably represents the white guy that owns it and not those that sold it to him

It represents the aboriginal nation that was here before control was resumed by force by my own european people with their own agenda

Aren’t all flags a symbol of colonialism? Rhetorical.

NOW THIS: from aoe3de U suggesting there’s sum major personages going on, ABCaustralia perhaps a patronage 4 pell or a possible other person’s privacy invasion lyk a murdochroyalcommission cartel. Tell K. Rudd abc’s going on some crudd tangent again driving presenters bonkers

It reminds us that we massacred them and tried to breed them out, yet we dont teach the truth in schools.

'We are one people made of many peoples' That's the definition of Australia. Stop segregation and race baiting

It represents segregation.
