Last week the Coalition shed more light on its plans to slash immigration and temporarily ban foreign investors from purchasing property. We've got an 11-year low of building approvals in our country and we have a situation where the government's bringing in 1.67 million people over five years, the biggest intake in our country's history.
Both issues have been exasperated by an influx of 548,800 immigrants entering Australia in the 12 months to September 2023, a pace which is outstripping the rate of construction of new homes. Meanwhile, refugee arrivals would be reduced by a third and foreign investors and temporary residents would be banned from buying established homes for two years.
Earlier on Thursday, the Opposition leader clashed with Government Services Minister Bill Shorten on Nine, who mocked Mr Dutton's proposal by sarcastically suggesting Australians were cheering him on.
