“Our umpires are clear on the interpretation of holding the ball, and it continues to be a focus of umpire coaching each week. We want to ensure our clubs, coaches and players understand the rules and how they are being officiated.” “There is no rule change … what has changed is there are mechanisms within the law where you can adjust your interpretation to service the need of the game,” Chamberlain told SEN.
Port Adelaide veteran Travis Boak said this week he had never been more confused over the interpretation of the rule.“If you asked me the question: ‘What is holding the ball?’, I don’t think I could answer it clearly right now, to be honest. In the 18 years I’ve been in the league, this is probably the most confused I’ve been with the rule holding the ball.”
