Hundreds of thousands of litres of illegally-stored chemicals from Victoria are being shipped to South Australia for treatment and disposal.

Following that revelation, the ABC sought details regarding the amount of refuse, its composition, and how it came to be in South Australia.

Prior to the fire, Victoria's EPA had suspended Bradbury Industrial Services operating licence, after discovering it was storing three times the permitted amount of waste. "Victoria is in a really significant crisis around waste and recycling and toxic stockpiles as well," according to inquiry member and Victorian Greens Leader, Samantha Ratnam.Ms Ratnam was also critical of the current arrangement with SA.

"There hasn't been enough of a spotlight and regulation of the industry as a whole and that's one of the reasons we are in the mess that we are in."
