Opinion: Rugby has been doing it tough for years, battered by a largely hostile media, but the faithful kept their lamps burning and on Saturday night 42,000 of them brought them out

From the best welcome to country done on a rugby ground through to James O’Connor’s nerveless conversion of his own try, this was rugby at its brightest. Not its best, because the Reds frankly were outplayed for huge chunks of the game by a desperately unlucky Brumbies. But in terms of what it meant to the game overall in this country, I can think of no other comparable match to equal it.

Australia is fascinated by recalling non-jumping second-rower Will Skelton from France, despite his past reluctance to answer his country’s call on anything but his own terms, but while the dearth of locks continues, this fascination will persist. That said, while Cadeyrn Neville provided his usual reliable service, it was the gritty combativeness of the Brumbies other lock, Darcy Swain, which excited most speculation.

Time and again, McReight was where Queensland needed him to be, demonstrating a rare awareness of pivotal moments. When the Brumbies unexpectedly opened the door at the 79th minute with a wild lineout tap-down, he was the man who grabbed possession which ultimately set up victory for Queensland.

How compulsory super turned business on its earThe Coalition is in an unusual position in regulating advisors to big investors. The 'reforms' it has proposed overwhelmingly favour directors and executives over shareholders, writes Ian Verrender. Super change Morrison wants people to be able to use their supper for buying their first home Do you support using your money to buy a home? Albo Labor says NO Supers basically a term deposit to which excuses the government from giving you the pension in the future. Its a silly idea. Instead, save money, send it to a different account offshore and still get the pension when your frail dying and still worried about buying an investment This is worrying. Basically the LNP government wants to stop company owners (us who have super) to have any say on how companies are run. Giving all the powers to executives (read LNP mates) to do whatever they want.
