Warragamba Dam heritage assessment ‘manifestly inadequate’: archaeologists | CameronGooley

The Aboriginal heritage report for a controversial $1 billion-plus proposal by the NSW government to raise the wall of Warragamba Dam was “manifestly inadequate”, according to a scathing report from respected Sydney archaeologists. The Sydney Morning Herald

Part of the reason the authors believe the report didn’t meet SEARs guidelines was due to inadequate consultation with registered Aboriginal parties in the area. “The idea of approving impacts to places of Aboriginal cultural heritage before they are even documented goes against a foundational principle of heritage management – that management decisions should be based on an understanding of the place and its significance,” it said.

The report said a total of 43 archaeological sites and 11 additional places of cultural value had been confirmed in the Project Upstream Inundation Area, but also added that a further 131 archaeological sites were estimated to be present in the region."Without even this most basic of information, it is not possible to make an informed decision about whether harm to Aboriginal sites should be permitted," the report said.
