A Perth war veteran has been “shocked and humiliated” by staff at a busy restaurant refusing him entry due to his assistance dog. 7NEWS

resident David Pearce was meeting his wife and her friend for lunch at Juicy Bao Bao in Northbridge at the weekend when he says he was told he could not enter due to his dog Gunner.Watch the latest news and stream for free onPearce, who has been partnered with Gunner for almost nine years after his time in the US Marine Corps, said it was the first time he had been refused entry to a venue that knew his dog was a service animal.

“There was a lot of shock, a lot of embarrassment — it’s never outright happened like that before where they knew it was a service dog,” he said. Despite this, more than a third of guide dog handlers across Australia have reported being denied access to a public venue or form of transport because of the animal over a 12-month period, according to Guide Dogs Australia.

“Service dogs are a necessary medical tool and companionship for people with disabilities that enable them to function as close to regular people as possible,” he said.
