Many shoppers buy vegetables they don’t use each week

This is despite the fact that Gen Y and Gen Z are significantly more willing than their older counterparts to pay more for food that is produced in environmentally sustainable ways and is humane or organic.

It is only a small portion of the population -- 14 per cent -- who say they waste zero food, meaning they eat or repurpose all of their food. It’s certainly not always the case at our place despite the best of intentions. Their appetites and even tastebuds change so frequently that it’s difficult to get the portions right.

Habits that are known to help include eating leftovers from previous meals, freezing food, planning meals in advance, thinking about portion size when cooking, using a shopping list, not shopping while hungry and having a food compost at home.
